Modern as they are, we still live in societies that demand men to project strength, stoicism and the ‘men don’t cry’ persona. Stereotypes that result in many men not feeling comfortable with openly sharing their mental and physical struggles. In November, as part of the annual global campaign Movember, Chocolate Tribe is participating in this impactful movement to raise awareness around men’s health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), men are lost too young – often for reasons that are preventable. As a forward-looking workplace, we are taking steps to make a difference to the men in our spheres of influence.
We are embarking on several fun-filled physical and mental challenges to get behind this cause but also, to get the men in our Tribe moving as well as talking more openly about struggles they may be facing. 3 Awards in 1 week, we have had an amazing week
Penny “Christmas Doesn’t Need Much” won a Silver Animation Craft Award at the Dutch Creativity Awards in The Netherlands (11 April), and last night (17 April) Chicken Licken “The Legend Of Big John” won the VFX Craft award at Ciclope Africa and Chicken Licken “Sbu 2.0” won the Ciclope Grand Prix! The Chicken Licken ads are now both heading to the finals in Berlin in November. Fingers crossed. The Dutch Creativity Awards Jury feedback regarding Penny was amazing: “The character design, animation and the visual details in the storytelling are heart warming, a beautiful short story that really touches you.”. Chocolate Tribe rigged all the lead characters and fully animated over 50 seconds of the almost 2 minute long ad.
It was an wonderful to yet again have teamed up with the Glassworks guys and work on this wonderful Christmas ad. Less than a week later, at the Ciclope Africa awards, we walked away with the Pink statue for the Visual Effects for Chicken Licken “Legend of Big John”. To top it of the Ciclope Grand Prix went to Chicken Licken “Sbu 2.0”. We had the honour of doing the visual effects on the Grand Prix winner of the night Chicken Licken “Sbu 2.0”. We want to thank They, Romance Films, Joe Public and all our passionate Tribe members for taking these exciting journeys with us to bring great VFX to wonderful South African stories.

Jaron Clegg, director of the music video “King of Time” invites us to enter a new world of space, travel and time. The music video captures a young South African couple arguing on the streets of Johannesburg when suddenly a tragic moment happens.
The young King rushes back in time to save and reverse this precious moment. The Chocolate Tribe worked together with director Jaron Clegg to assist him in bringing his vision to life.

Robot And Scarecrow Wins VFX Craft
VFX craft : We are very proud to announce that Robot And Scarecrow last night (20 August) won a TV Craft certificate award for Visual Effects (Loerie Awards 2017). It was a solid 120 shots and 8 months of pure visual effects, animation and compositing joy! Well done team. You all rock!

Chocolate Tribe features on Redshift 3D
Redshift3D wrote a fantastic blog post on their main page about “Robot and Scarecrow” recently. It gives a glimpse behind the scenes of the rendering process at Chocolate Tribe using Redshift. Chocolate Tribe was responsible for over 90 of all the 140 VFX shots on Robot & Scarecrow, the latest short film from acclaimed UK director Kibwe Tavares. The film was co-produced by London based production houses, DMC Film (owned by Michael Fassbender and Conor McCaughan) and Nexus Studio. Starring Holliday Grainger and Jack O’Connell as the titular Robot and Scarecrow, this beautiful film tells the tale of a robot pop performer who meets a lonely scarecrow at a festival where they then embark on a whirlwind of experiences.

Sundance London 2017
Robot And Scarecrow at Sundance
We’re proud to announce that Kibwe Tavares’s “Robot And Scarecrow” is part of the Sundance London 2017 selection (1-4 June) . We completed a 127 VFX shots, doing full body and facial replacement on both the scarecrow and robot lead characters. Quite a number, and a first for South Africa, due to it’s scale and type of VFX work. Keep an eye out for more news soon.

Tiaan Franken joins Chocolate Tribe
We’re proud to announce that Tiaan Franken, from Moving Vector has joined us. Tiaan’s experience in the VFX and Animation world is extensive. Some of his more recent work includes Jannes Hendrickz’ amazing “All Gold” ad (shown above), as well the feature film “Lucky Specials” by Rea Rangaka for Discovery Channel. His great technical skills in motion capture, dynamic and crowd simulations, complex rigging, scripting, programming, as well as virtual reality and immersive 360 rendering, will boost the studio’s productivity even further. Tiaan is no stranger to us though. We have had the pleasure to work with Tiaan for the last 4 years. Tiaan has a great team spirit, amazing positivity and his interest in developing the studio’s production pipeline even further fits in beautifully with Chocolate Tribe’s long term vision.
